Customer Computing Tips for
CSSPC Linux configured systems
shipping with Xubuntu 12.10





To Lock Screen, Switch User, Suspend, Shutdown, Restart, logout:
(go to upper right hand corner where username is listed) left mouse click on username


switching multiple workspaces:
a few ways to do:
1) find in upper left hand corner area, click on desired workspace [W1, W2, W3, W4],
(CSSPC preconfigured your machine to have 4 such workspaces)

2) press 'Ctrl' and 'Alt' keys followed by left and right arrows.
3) press 'Ctrl' and 'Alt' keys followed by workspace number on keypad.
4) press 'Ctrl' and 'F1' for W1, 'Ctrl' and Fx where x is Function key 1-12 for corresponding Workspace


To add/remove workspaces:
to add press 'Alt' and 'Insert'
to delete last workspace press 'Alt' and 'Delete'


To adjust volume setttings:
Left mouse click on speaker looking icon in upper right hand corner area; use slider but for detailed settings choose 'sound settings'.


Changing Thunar file browser views:
Use menu within Thunar or these short cuts:

1) press key 'Ctrl' and '1' for icon view (default)
2) press key 'Ctrl' and '2' for list view
3) press key 'Ctrl' and '3' for compact view


Repositioning a window
Use any of these ways
1) Left mouse click on title bar of window and hold button now while repositioning
When you can not get to the title bar so you can reposition the window use either of these methods:
2) Hold down the Alt key now left click mouse hold and reposition then release button when done
3) press 'Alt' and then 'spacebar' release then 'm', use arrow keys to reposition and press enter


To resize window
Use any of these ways
1) Use left mouse click on the fringes of the window
2) [WOW!]   'Alt' and right mouse click while you hold the mouse pointer anywhere over the window frame


To add flash player to your firefox browser follow these steps
From the top panel [panel 0]
step1: Left mouse click on 'Applications' then
step2: Left mouse click on 'Ubuntu Software Center' then
step3: search for flash then
step4: double left mouse click on 'Adobe Flash plugin'
step5: read adobe flash plugin text at 'Developer Web Site' and if you agree then
step6: left mouse click on 'Install' if that button does not appear but rather you see a 'Remove' button then Flash plugin is already installed
step7: wait for step6 to finish then close the 'Ubuntu Software Center' window
step8: If you have any firefox windows open; close them and then restart firefox, you should now be able to browse websites with flash content such sites include www.youtube.com



Toggling firefox from full-screen to non-full-screen
Press key F11 to toggle between full-screen and non-full-screen



Toggling LibreOffice programs from full-screen to non-full-screen
Press and hold keys 'Ctrl' and 'Shift' and then press the 'j' key.



Adjusting the text size in Firefox
To increase text size press and hold key 'Ctrl' while pressing the '+' key
To decrease text size press and hold key 'Ctrl' while pressing the '-' key



Adjusting the text size in Thunderbird email's body
To increase text size press and hold key 'Ctrl' while pressing the '+' key
To decrease text size press and hold key 'Ctrl' while pressing the '-' key



Using your scrolling middle '[rotating] button' on your mouse device
rotate to move forward and backward when over a given window
rotate to 'roll up/down' a window when over a given window's title bar
